The mild oceanic climate of West Cork offers exciting possibilities for gardening. Tender plants — in particular, flowering shrubs like Camellia, Abutilon and Crinodendron — are found in gardens of all sizes. Many great gardeners have left their mark here over the years. A famous example is the Italian garden on Garnish island. However, there are other charming gardens near to hand, from tiny cottage gardens to large demesnes with woodland walks and specimen trees.
Various gardens in the area are open to the public — some throughout the season, others at particular times such as the week-long West Cork Garden Trail. There are also events and courses for those who wish to perfect their own gardening skills.
